Best Breakfast Options for Diabetics

Studies show that skipping breakfast can throw your blood sugar levels out of whack for the whole day. Don't leave the house without it! Try some of these healthy options.

Eggs

Packed with protein, eggs are a great way to start the day. If you don't have time to cook, try making miniature crustless quiches in muffin tins (filled with yummy roasted chopped vegetables and just a sprinkle of cheese). You can store them in baggies in the fridge or freezer, and pull them out on an as-needed basis. Heat them in the microwave, and they're just as good as the day you cooked them.

Oatmeal

Even if you're on a controlled carbohydrate diet, oatmeal is an excellent choice for carbs. Oatmeal is a complex carb that's packed with fiber. Steer clear of the instant flavored oatmeal packets laden with sugar-- you can boil water and steep steel-cut oats while you get dressed. Throw in some chopped fruit, nuts, or a little squirt of honey for flavor.

Yogurt

No time to cook? That's fine-- grab some low-fat yogurt and take it on the go. One cup of yogurt has less than one serving of carbohydrates and 8 grams of protein. Eat it with a piece of fruit, or give it a delicious crunch by sprinkling some granola or crushed bran flakes over it.
